Can you guess which South African national park was recently named the tenth-best birdwatching destination on the planet?
South Africa (14 July 2026) – If you guessed the Kruger, you’d be right!
A new study from AllClear Travel Insurance has revealed the world’s best birdwatching destinations, with South Africa’s Kruger National Park ranking among the global top 10.
The study assessed 115 globally recognised birdwatching hotspots across six continents to identify the world’s leading birdwatching destinations.
Factors including the number of bird species, the number of notable species, a standout species score, mean annual temperature, mean wind speed, mean annual precipitation, distance from the nearest airport and estimated daily tourist costs were all used to determine the top rankings.
While Manú National Park in Peru claimed the top spot as the world’s best birdwatching destination, four African locations featured in the rankings, including sites in Kenya and Botswana. South Africa’s Kruger National Park came in at an impressive tenth overall.
Twitchers will likely agree that Kruger deserves its place in the top 10, with an incredible variety of bird species found throughout the country’s largest national park.
“Birdwatching is rapidly growing in popularity, and it is easy to understand why. There are few experiences quite like spotting a rare or iconic species in its natural habitat. For those looking for a rewarding but calming way to experience the natural world, birdwatching offers an immersive outdoor adventure that can be enjoyed at a gentle pace without the physical demands of more strenuous activities,” shares Letitia Smith, Travel Insurance Expert at AllClear.
