Thanks to a dedicated resident who stepped up to restore and build new trails across Makhanda, the community is thriving, with families, children, and pets reconnecting with nature on safe, vibrant pathways.

Makhanda, South Africa (15 July 2026) – A Makhanda (Grahamstown) community member has been working tirelessly to create an outdoor trail network that connects people with nature, with each other, and with the unique landscapes that make the town special!

While the brains behind the trails of GTown Trails prefer to remain anonymous, they have quietly taken on the massive task of clearing paths, picking up litter, and managing invasive alien plant species – all out of a generous desire to uplift the local community.

Against the backdrop of a challenging municipal environment, this self-driven project has breathed new life into the town. By transforming neglected areas into clean, safe spaces, as well as creating brand-new routes across the commonage, the initiative has successfully encouraged residents, youth, and adventure seekers to step outside and explore.

Today, it is common to see a beautiful sight: families, children, and dogs enjoying a healthy, active lifestyle on the paths.

At its core, GTown Trails is a pay-it-forward act of kindness. While the project has received some corporate sponsorship, it remains largely self-funded and fuelled by pure community spirit.

To have residents fully immerse themselves in these revitalised spaces and new routes, an exciting new event is just around the corner!

Starting next Monday evening (and running for three consecutive Mondays), the community is invited to experience the trails in a whole new light. The Highlander Trail Run Night Series will feature curated paths across the GTown Trails network, featuring a cleared old railway line and newly opened views of local dams. The vibe promises to be community-paced, highly welcoming, and designed for all fitness levels. It is a fantastic opportunity to experience a familiar Grahamstown singletrack in an unfamiliar, magical night-time light.

At its heart, GTown Trails is a community-driven initiative dedicated to creating and maintaining a network of safe, accessible, and enjoyable trails in and around Makhanda.
