The Proteas believe their tough build-up, overseas experience and returning veterans have them in the right place ahead of Glasgow

Johannesburg, South Africa (17 July 2026)- The road to the 2026 Commonwealth Games is entering its final stretch, and Netball South Africa are embracing every moment as they gear up for the tournament in Glasgow from 23 July to 2 August.

With the squad now settled into camp, captain Khanyisa Chawane says the mood is exactly where it needs to be: focused, competitive and full of excitement.

“Everyone has settled in well, we’re pushing each other in training, but at the same time we’re enjoying ourselves. That’s important because we’re all excited about what’s ahead.”

The Proteas head into the Games after months of carefully planned preparation, taking on some of the world’s strongest teams, including Australia, New Zealand and England. Chawane believes every challenge along the way has played a role in getting the team ready for Glasgow.

“At the time you don’t always see the bigger picture, but now it all makes sense. Every tour, every Test and every tournament has helped prepare us for this moment.”

One of the biggest talking points ahead of the Games has been the return of veteran defender Karla Pretorius, who is back in national colours after taking a year away from international netball.

Pretorius, who has earned 120 caps for South Africa and will compete at her third Commonwealth Games, admits returning to the squad feels surprisingly familiar.

“It honestly feels like my very first tour again. There’s that excitement and even a few nerves, but I’ve felt so welcomed back into the environment. It feels like I can simply continue where I left off.”

Chawane says Pretorius’ experience has already made an impact, with younger defenders regularly leaning on the former captain for advice during training.

The Proteas captain also highlighted the value of having players spread across local and international competitions. Several squad members currently ply their trade overseas, bringing fresh ideas and different experiences back into the national setup.

Now, it’s about taking that momentum onto the court and showing what South African netball is capable of.
