As an RSV outbreak sweeps through Upper Highway Baby Home, dedicated caregivers are working tirelessly to nurse vulnerable babies back to health – and they need the greater community’s support to pull through.

Upper Highway, South Africa (22 July 2026) – Over the past two weeks, Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) has swept through Upper Highway Baby Home (UHBH), leaving caregivers exhausted and heavy-hearted as they work tirelessly to care for the little ones who depend on them.

RSV is a common, highly contagious respiratory virus that infects the nose, throat, and lungs. In most healthy children and adults, RSV feels like a mild cold, with recovery taking a week or two. However, RSV can become dangerous for infants under 12 months and adults aged 65 or older, as it can spread deep into the lower respiratory tract.

UHBH has already had two babies hospitalised after an incoming baby was admitted with a persistent case of RSV, unbeknownst to members of the home. Today the dedicated team confirmed that it took yet another unwell newborn to their trusted paediatrician to be assessed.

“Our little ones are fighting so hard, and we are doing everything we can to keep them safe and comfortable. Unfortunately, caring for so many sick babies has meant that we have run desperately low on essential medications and supplies,” the baby home shared online.

Founded by foster parents Gary and Kerry Stanton in 2019, UHBH began when they opened their hearts and home to abandoned and vulnerable babies in KwaZulu-Natal. Since then, the award-winning home has remained committed to providing temporary safe care and foster care to little ones in desperate need of love, safety, and family.

Now, this organisation that does so much for innocent lives needs a helping hand to fight this wave of RSV.

“If you are able to help in any way, we would be so incredibly grateful.”

UHBH is in urgent need of the following medications and supplies:

  • Panado
  • Ibumol
  • Tissues
  • Sanitiser
  • Milton
  • Alcophyllex
  • Budoneb
  • Coryx
  • ACC 200
  • Sterimar
  • Bonnisan
  • Probiotics
  • Baby vitamins
  • Similac Gold Comfort 1 & 2
