South Africa’s four-legged protectors are on a roll! Here is how Mossel Bay’s awesome K9 team just landed a major win for our marine life.

Mossel Bay, South Africa (22 October 2026) – We love seeing South Africa’s working dogs make the news! During an overnight operation along the Mossel Bay coast, the amazing K9 Mufasa sniffed out 121.1 kg of poached abalone – worth  R161,000 on the street.

This joint effort kicked off at 23:00 on Tuesday, 20 October and ran through 06:00 on Wednesday, 21 October 2026.

Teams from Mossel Bay Law Enforcement, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, the Sea Border Police, and Great Brak River SAPS teamed up with the Municipal K9 Unit for a thorough sweep that successfully brought two suspects into custody.

We have to give a extra-special shoutout to K9 Mufasa, the trail-blazing first member of the Mossel Bay Municipality’s K9 team. Specially trained alongside his handler to tackle tactical duties, searches, and tracking down endangered species, Mufasa’s snout led the way in the operation.

It warms the heart to see South Africa’s working dogs getting the love and recognition they so truly deserve. These four-legged pups enrich our communities in many different ways. They’re involved in law enforcement, anti-poaching, search and rescue, in comforting the vulnerable, and in guiding and assisting the ill and impaired.

This impressive bust comes right on the heels of the City of Cape Town’s very first K9 competition, where 15 teams from across the region went snout-to-snout in agility, detection, and protection events. Star dog K9 Dash from Table Mountain National Park stole the show by walking away with top honours.

Now Mossel Bay’s Mufasa takes the spotlight after his sharp marine poaching bust!

“Municipal K9s are trained to work alongside their handlers, assisting officers with detection, searches and tactical law-enforcement duties. Their training includes the detection of endangered species.” shares Mossel Bay’s municipality. “This successful operation reflects the power of strong inter-agency collaboration, disciplined execution and a shared commitment to protecting our coastline and marine resources.”
