A promise made to his blind granny has taken young inventor Elihle Stali further than he ever imagined. After South Africans helped him get to China, his AI-powered smart glasses for the blind have secured major backing!

Hong Kong, China (23 July 2026) – When Elihle Amahle Stali was growing up in Zwelitsha in the Eastern Cape, there was one part of his morning routine that never changed. His grandmother, who was blind, would call for him. She needed help getting to the bathroom. Elihle would take her hand and guide her there.

”Elihle, mfondini, khawundibambe isandla undincede ndiye toilet.” (Elihle, my boy, please hold my hand and help me to get to the toilet.)

Even at his young age, he knew that he wanted to find another way. He wanted his grandmother – and others living with visual impairments – to experience more independence, more confidence and more dignity in their day-to-day lives.

That turned into an 11-year-promise which has since flourished into Spectacles4TheBlind SA!

Now, as a young inventor who is 24-years-old, Elihle has partnered with A Nation of Light. Together, they have engineered a unique pair of AI-powered smart glasses designed to guide the blind.

The spectacles use a built-in voice assistant to help blind and visually impaired users navigate their surroundings. The system can communicate verbally in English, Afrikaans, isiXhosa, isiZulu and Sesotho.

Inspiringly, Elihle has not only lived up to the long-held promise he made, but he has also just received incredible international recognition for it!

This month, he travelled to China to showcase his innovation after being selected among the world’s Top 150 startups for the Leap Startup competition. Just weeks before his departure, Stali was still searching for a way to fund the trip to Hong Kong.

Chasing the real opportunity to travel there and find the manufacturers and investors needed to bring his invention into the world, he approached dozens of companies in the hopes of securing sponsorship. At first, the responses were few and the silence discouraging.

But slowly, over the weeks that followed, South Africa began to rally behind Elihle’s vision. The media picked up his story, he was featured on the radio and on the news. With every set of eyes and every conversation, the support grew. An online crowdfunding campaign was set up to raise over R80,000 to get him to China. Over 700 people donated, more than doubling the fundraising goal!

That is how a proudly South African innovation, designed to make a real impact for the blind, has made it all the way to China.

This week brought the most hopeful news yet. Spectacles4TheBlind SA has received international backing! According to reports, Stali’s three-day exhibit at the Leap Startup East competition has helped him secure a major international manufacturing deal for his smart glasses.

If the next chapter unfolds as hoped, countless other people may soon have more freedom to find their own way!

“The moment I’ve been waiting for, for a long time, has arrived.” he says.
