By combining technology with community service, a local initiative is helping emergency responders while preparing tomorrow’s drone professionals.
Johannesburg, South Africa (24 July 2026) – A group of young South Africans is proving that drones can do far more than capture breathtaking aerial shots. Instead, they can also help save lives, support police and create new opportunities for the next generation.
The initiative, known as C-Tech under the non-profit Corinthians Africa, grew out of a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) education programme, where students were learning technical skills in the classroom. Instead of leaving those lessons behind once class ended, the team found a way to put them into action where they matter most.
Today, those same skills are being used to support police, emergency services and local communities through drone technology.
One recent operation highlighted just how valuable that support can be.
During a day when multiple protests broke out across Johannesburg’s south, police officers found themselves stretched thin, with only a handful of vehicles available to respond. C-Tech was called in to provide aerial support, using its drone to give officers a live view of what was happening on the ground.
The drone helped identify which gatherings remained peaceful and which required urgent attention, allowing police to deploy their limited resources where they were needed most and helping prevent situations from escalating further.
The programme has also assisted in other community operations, including searches for missing children, showing how technology can become a practical tool for public safety.
What’s most remarkable is that all of this work is currently being done using just one drone. The vision goes beyond emergency response.
The team hopes to expand the programme by training more young South Africans as licensed drone pilots, creating career opportunities in aviation, mapping, technology and data analysis. It’s an approach that combines community service with skills development, giving young people the chance to build meaningful careers while making a real difference where they live.
C-Tech are proving that innovation doesn’t always start in a lab. It can also start in our communities grow through curiosity, and end up helping an entire community.
