Willowmore is well on its way to becoming an art tour destination, with yet another proudly South African mural gracing town walls.
Karoo, South Africa (17 August 2025) – Two beautiful blue cranes have found a permanent home on the walls of the Old Post Office in the small Karoo town of Willowmore.
The new mural, painted by well-known Garden Route artist Fourie Ackermann, is the latest in a series of murals that have gone up in the town since June last year, when Revive Willowmore launched its first upliftment project.
The project is part of a local initiative working to breathe new life into the town. Revive Willowmore focuses on sustainable and environmental projects, community development and environmental clean-ups, as well as skills development and training for the unemployed.

One of the initiative’s many ongoing efforts is to beautify the budding Karoo destination with colourful works made by local artists. Over the months, more than 14 murals have gone up on walls across town. Ackermann was the first artist to join the initiative, followed by the likes of Annette Schoeman, Mook Lion, Nelton Nigel Willemse and others.
The organisation says the artworks support the long-term goal of transforming Willowmore into a proudly South African art tour destination.
“With every mural that appears on our walls, the dream of creating a unique Art Tour destination in Willowmore moves one step closer to reality. What started as a vision is steadily becoming something tangible as more and more visitors make their way to our town to admire the incredible artwork transforming ordinary walls into vibrant landmarks.” the NPC shared online.

Many of the murals in Willowmore portray local wildlife, including kudus, gemsbok, donkeys and now, two beautiful blue cranes – South Africa’s national bird, and residents of the Karoo – standing tall and proud.
“There is something so special about seeing these beautiful birds brought to life on a wall in the heart of Willowmore. They belong to this landscape — and now they have found their place in our Town of Murals.” the NPC shared.
