San Salvador Home must relocate after nine decades in Hyde Park and is raising funds to safely move the 58 women with intellectual disabilities in its care.
Johannesburg, South Africa (17 August 2026) – San Salvador Home has been a sanctuary for women with intellectual disabilities for nearly ninety years. It has provided residential care for these ladies in a space where they are deeply known, supported and treated as family.
The Hyde Park residence is currently home to 58 women who are cared for with love, dignity and respect. Unfortunately, San Salvador now faces one of the biggest changes in its history.
At the end of this year, the property that has housed San Salvador since 1936 will be sold for commercial development, meaning the organisation must relocate every one of the women in its care.
While the move will ensure San Salvador can continue its work, it comes with heartbreaking consequences. The organisation says leaving its long-time home also means losing the community and relationships built over generations, and that not every resident or staff member will be able to make the move.
“With the loss of our home comes the loss of community and relationships. We are devastated that this move will mean that some residents and staff members will not be able to move with us.” the organisation shares.
Relocating is also a massive logistical undertaking. Every step of the move needs to be planned carefully to ensure residents experience as little disruption as possible while they still receive the care and support they rely on each day.
To help make that possible, an online crowdfunding campaign has been launched to cover the estimated R250,000 cost of the relocation. So far, the campaign has raised R31,193, reaching 12% of its goal. That leaves just over R218,000 still needed before the move takes place at the end of the year.
Donations go directly towards ensuring the relocation is carried out with the love and compassion San Salvador’s residents deserve. Sharing the campaign may also help reach people who can assist.
“All funds raised will go towards ensuring our move is completed with the highest levels of care and consideration. If you are able to assist towards the moving costs, we would be so grateful.” the home shares. “We are confident that, together, we will be able to create a beautiful new future for our ladies.”
