Stormie was named after the day she was rescued. When Inspector Nakita first laid eyes upon her, she could feel her heartache. Now, she gets to give her a ‘forever.’
Cape Town, South Africa (19 August 2026) – Nakita Sutter is a Trainee Inspector at the Cape of Good Hope SPCA. Earlier this year, she and the team were sent out to help animals in the flooded streets of Manenberg. That is the day she met Mama, who now goes by Stormie.
“During severe flooding in Manenberg, our SPCA Inspectorate team was out navigating the waterlogged streets when trainee Inspector Sutter spotted two similar-looking dogs wading through the floodwaters. We followed them to a closed gate, knocked, and were brought onto the property. Down at the bottom of a flight of outdoor stairs sat a makeshift kennel.
That was where their story began to unfold.” the SPCA shares.
Both dogs had given birth just a week apart, and were nursing two litters of vulnerable puppies. Their owner admitted she simply couldn’t afford to care for them anymore, so both mothers and all their babies were surrendered into the SPCA’s care.
And then there was her…
“From day one, I called her Mama. She had the most heartbreaking, pleading eyes, looking back at those early pictures still makes my heart ache because she had given absolutely everything she had to keep her pups alive.” says the SPCA Trainee Inspector, Nakita.
She was afraid, but she was gentle. Nakita says that Mama had done everything to care for her puppies, putting their lives above her own.
“She was terrified of people, but underneath all that fear was a gentle, beautiful soul. She put herself last; everything was about her puppies.” she says.
Then, Nakita began taking Mama out for regular walks while she and her pups were in the SPCA’s care.
“When I started taking her out for daily walks, I noticed something that broke my heart a little more: she refused to go to the toilet anywhere near her litter, waiting until we were far enough away on our walks before she’d relieve herself. She was entirely devoted to them.”
Nakita would visit her every single day, slowly earning this devoted mommy’s trust.
“The first day she did an excited little scoot because she saw me coming with her lead for walk time is a moment I’ll hold onto forever.”
When Mama and her pups were cleared medically, they were moved over to the SPCA’s adoption section. The pups found their forever homes soon after that, but Mama stayed behind.
“One by one, all her puppies found loving homes, and that was my cue to step in for one final gift of love. I brought her into my own heart and home.”
That is how Mama became Storm, named after the day she and her loving human first met.
Nakita now calls her Stormie, and she is officially part of the Sutter pack.
“After spending so much of her life being responsible for other lives, she has joined our little family.” Nakita says. “The absolute joy she gets from playing, following them, and simply being ‘one of the dogs’ is incredible to watch. She has become deeply attached to my husband and son, and when we take her somewhere she can run off-lead, she constantly turns around to check: ‘Are you still there?” And we are. Every single time’”
Stormie is discovering a whole new life. One where she is loved unconditionally. She has her own bed and many treats. Slowly, she is learning that comfort is a part of her world now.
She still has a journey ahead of her. Nakita says that Stormie stays on guard and alert, which keeps her from restful sleep. The hope is that she will soon learn that she is safe enough to relax.
“Right now, even when her body rests, she stays alert – as if some part of her still believes she needs to stay on guard.” Nakita says. “I’m waiting for the day she curls up amongst her pack, closes those beautiful eyes completely, and sleeps without checking or worrying. Because that’s the moment I’ll know she finally understands… she is safe.”
Nakita says that the experience of rescuing Stormie and now becoming her family has been incredibly special.
“Only another Inspector will fully understand what it meant to me to take off her red surrendered collar, put my own name to her microchip, and ensure she was sterilized so she never has to worry about anything but herself again.”
“The storm has passed. Now Stormie gets to learn what it feels like to be home.”
