A Boy’s Extra Bike

When a Cordwalles Prep Grade RR boy overheard that one of his classmates didn’t have a bicycle for Bike Week at school, he went home, told his mom about it and returned the next morning with an extra bike to share!

Pietermaritzburg, South Africa (20 August 2026) – Most of us can recall hearing or being taught the famous saying, “sharing is caring”, which invites us to give a little of what we have to someone with less. It is this very adage that became the heart of the sweetest moment that unfolded at Cordwalles Preparatory School between two Grade RR boys recently.

The school held Bike Week, inviting pupils to bring their bicycles for a day of fun and healthy competition.

Amid all the excitement, one Cordwalles Grade RR boy overheard a friend saying that one of their classmates didn’t have a bicycle. Concerned that his classmate might miss out, he went home and told his mom about it.

“He had two bikes, so he asked if he could bring his extra one to school to share. He arrived at school the next morning with an extra bike because he didn’t want someone else to miss out on the fun,” shares Kerry Koller, Cordwalles Preparatory School’s Head of Marketing.

“For us, this is Ubuntu in its simplest and perhaps most meaningful form. It is learning to notice the people around you, to think beyond yourself and to understand that what matters to someone else should matter to you too.”

And we couldn’t agree more! The boy’s sincere gesture to share his extra bike has not only melted our hearts but also speaks to his awe-inspiring ability to recognise and respond to the needs of a classmate with compassion. Not only did they both get to enjoy Bike Day, but the boy also displayed a kindness beyond his years and one we could all learn from.

His act of kindness beautifully embodies the school’s current term theme: “Care for One Another”.

“It was a lovely reminder that Care for One Another starts with noticing, and sometimes the smallest gestures tell the biggest stories. These are big ideas for little boys, but often they understand them in the simplest ways. In this case, it was an extra bike and a little boy who didn’t want his friend to miss out,” Kerry eloquently put it.
