World Granny Square Day

Every granny square made during this cosy afternoon at the movies went towards a good cause.

Johannesburg, South Africa (20 August 2026) – The cinema at Cedar Square came alive with crafters this past Saturday as knitters and crocheters filled all 123 seats, with needles and hooks at the ready.

Saturday marked World Granny Square Day. Community Hours, a local platform that connects volunteers with suitable opportunities, celebrated the occasion by hosting a special ‘Knit at the Movies’ event.

Attendees spent the afternoon knitting their way through Notting Hill, creating granny squares for a good cause.

The event was held in partnership with 67 Blankets, the well-known local non-profit that turns knitted and crocheted squares into scarves and blankets for people in need.

“The event was an absolute triumph – we filled the entire 123-seater venue, and at the same time created a wonderful atmosphere of laughter, friendship, creativity and, of course, plenty of wool!” shared Community Hours, following the event. “It was a treat to partner in kindness with 67 Blankets and such special way to celebrate the impact that time given, creativity shared and a little more warmth being added to the world.”

We love to see communities knit to do their bit!

Community Hours is not the only local organisation bringing crafts and cinema together. Johannesburg’s independent cinema, The Bioscope, hosts a monthly screening where the lights stay on so moviegoers can knit, sew, crochet or work on other crafts while enjoying a classic film.

Crafty attendees can bring along their own projects or contribute to The Bioscope’s blanket drive for the Baby Box Project. Donated granny squares are joined together to create blankets for mothers in under-resourced communities across Johannesburg.

The next craft-friendly screening takes place on Saturday, 19 September. Find out more here!
