After months of surviving between busy roads and learning to trust from a distance, Meisie’s journey has finally led her to safety, gentle care, and the hopeful beginning of a life where she can heal at her own pace.

Virginia, Free State, South Africa (20 August 2026) – Late last year, the community of Virginia noticed that a certain four-legged girl had taken up residence on the island between the double main road from Virginia to Welkom.

When the Virginia SPCA learned about the dog’s circumstances, the team became deeply concerned as the area was an extremely busy road, and she was terribly vulnerable.

“We tried everything we could to lure her towards us with fresh, tasty food, but she wanted absolutely nothing to do with people. If we came too close for her comfort, she bolted,” the SPCA shared.

Because chasing a frightened dog on a busy main road was not an option, the team did the only thing they could: they simply showed up every day to make sure the poor dog was alright.

“We spoke to her. We left food for her. We kept our distance and hoped that, little by little, she would realise we meant her no harm. We also hoped she was eating the food, and not the mongooses and many wild birds sharing the area.”

Days became weeks. Weeks became months. Summer slowly turned into winter, and still this little black dog survived.

“Surprisingly, she remained in reasonably good condition, so we hoped our daily feeding was helping her through.”

After months of carefully earned progress, the unexpected happened: the dog the team had cared for so delicately disappeared.

Thankfully, she was later spotted in another area, once again living on an island between two busy roads. The SPCA alerted the Merriespruit community to keep a lookout for her.

“People began watching out for her and trying to find a way to get her to safety. Along the way, this little street survivor was given a name: Meisie.”

Meisie surprised her followers and supporters yet again when, one day out of the blue, a kind lady, Ciskané Kruger, informed the SPCA that the wandering dog had entered her property seeking warmth in an outside room.

Finally, Meisie was contained and safe, bringing a wave of relief to every heart that had held onto hope that she would eventually find safety.

The SPCA acknowledged that while Meisie’s physical condition tells one story, her emotional scars tell another.

“She is extremely timid. She doesn’t trust easily. And we don’t blame her. We don’t know everything Meisie experienced before we found her, but we do know what happens from here. There will be no rushing her. No forcing affection. No expecting her to suddenly understand that she is safe. We will meet Meisie exactly where she is,” the team assures.

Just as they handled her with gentle care while she was on the streets, the SPCA team will be just as attentive to her at their rescue shelter.

The organisation thanked the Merriespruit community for helping keep watch over this little girl, and especially Ciskané Kruger and Chantel van den Berg for helping bring this long journey on the streets to a heartwarming end.
