A group of Durbs’ animal lovers willingly landed themselves in the doghouse for the best reason!
Durban, South Africa (21 August 2026) – A warm bed was off the cards for a group of Durban animal lovers recently, who signed up to spend the night in kennels in support of the Durban & Coast SPCA.
The organisation hosted its fifth annual Kennel Sleepover on Saturday, 15 August, at its Springfield Park premises, with 27 people who showed in their PJs to take part.
The fundraiser sees participants give up their beds for the night and sleep inside the SPCA’s kennels, while friends, family and supporters donate towards getting them ‘adopted’ out again.

Each participant sets a fundraising goal of at least R5000 that goes towards the organisation and its work helping animals across the greater Durban area.
The sleepover itself was a hoot. Friends and family could pop in during visiting hours. There were games, dinner and fundraising challenges that made some attendees break a sweat…

Behind all the fun is a meaningful cause. The event took place on International Homeless Animals Day. Observed every year, it shines an important light on the many animals that find themselves without homes through abandonment, surrender or life on the streets. Caring for those animals is a massive part of what Durban & Coast SPCA does.
It also responds to cruelty complaints, rescues animals in distress, provides veterinary treatment and shelters stray and unwanted dogs and cats while they wait to be reunited with their families or find new ones.
These commitments come with high bills. A fundraiser like this one helps the SPCA deliver on its promise to step in for every animal that needs help.
The goal for the 27 sleepy champions and their supporters was to raise R199 000,00 to support the SPCA. They blew that goal right out of the water, with the total funds raised through the event totalling at R 222 500,00!
It was an especially fitting fundraiser in a big year for the Durban & Coast SPCA, which is celebrating 130 years of helping animals in the region.
Well done to all the participants and supporters who backed Durban’s animals in need!
