After difficult starts to their respective tournaments, both the men’s and women’s teams found some late momentum in the classification phase.
Global (24 August 2026) – South Africa’s men’s and women’s hockey teams have given themselves something positive to take into the final stages of the tournament.
Both sides picked up points in their latest classification matches, with the women claiming their first win of the competition against Chile, while the men came agonisingly close to another victory before Malaysia struck in the final minute.
Women Finally Get Their Breakthrough
The women had to fight their way back from an early setback against Chile, with Manuela Urroz putting the South Americans ahead from a penalty corner in the first quarter.
South Africa responded through captain Edith Molikoe, who produced an excellent finish after winning possession to bring the sides level before half-time.
It also means the women remain unbeaten in the classification phase after their earlier 1–1 draw with Japan.
Men Show Their Fighting Spirit Against Malaysia
The men, meanwhile, looked set for a second successive win after already beating France 3–1 in the classification phase.
They had to come from behind twice against Malaysia, with Luke Wynford and Nic Spooner finding the goals to level things up after Malaysia had taken the lead.
Mustapha Cassiem then put South Africa in front in the third quarter with another standout World Cup finish, giving the African champions a 3–2 advantage heading into the final stages.
For both teams, the World Cup has certainly brought its challenges. But with the classification phase providing some encouraging performances and results, the South African sides have shown plenty of fight.
