After being found frightened, injured and pregnant, Angel was rescued just in time and finally given the care and compassion she deserved thanks to Giving is Living.

Cape Town, South Africa (24 August 2026) – Found 18 months ago, terrified and stuck in a cattle gate, Angel was a pregnant horse who had already endured much hardship. She could easily have faced even more suffering, or worse, had she not been taken in by Giving is Living.

Thankfully, members of Giving is Living had been alerted to Angel’s circumstances in the nick of time. She had been chased by local children before becoming stuck in the cattle gate, where the owner of the farm had rather harsh plans to get her off his property. But thanks to a number of local heroes, she was pulled out.

Though her legs were lacerated and ripped open, luckily there was no permanent ligament or tendon damage, and she was taken to Wellington Hospital to be treated and bandaged.

She was later taken to Giving is Living for rehabilitation and rest until her foal was born.

“Rascal was born just over a year ago and is a perfect little colt, with no injuries as a result of the abuse his mom suffered while carrying him. Amazingly, his legs have white patches in the same area where his mom suffered her leg injuries, almost in sympathy for the agony that she went through,” the team shared.

Since arriving at the animal welfare shelter, Angel has come a long way from attacking her carers when touched and flinching when offered a treat. She now allows herself to be groomed, takes treats, has her feet trimmed, accepts being blanketed and is much calmer around people.

“Her little moustache, a result of foraging on rocks and barren ground while looking for scarce food, is still present, but Rascal shows no sign of one, having had ample food since he was born.”

Looking back on her journey from suffering to safety, the team notes that Angel’s reality before they took her in is one experienced by so many other horses, including some who never get the help, care and second chance at a better life.

“Countless other horses are out there in rural areas close to Cape Town, and there is no help for them. They have fallen through the cracks as far as the Animal Protection Act goes, and despite what most people believe, horses can’t live on what little grass there may be in the fields they are confined to. They need proper nutrition, feet trimmed, deworming and access to sufficient clean water.”

The Giving is Living initiative collects donations, monetary or otherwise, and distributes them to the many animal charities in South Africa, focusing on those most in need.
