You knew the memes were coming. You expected the jokes. But did anyone have “fully playable Airlink flyover game” on their bingo card?
South Africa (01 September 2026) – Two Airlink jets flew over Cape Town’s DHL Stadium on Saturday, the footage went viral around the world, everyone had an opinion… and just two days later, somebody turned the whole thing into a game.
Flappy Link, which apparently has no affiliation with Airlink, puts you in control of a little passenger plane flying over Cape Town, with one very important objective: get as close to the stadium as possible without crashing. Yes, “LOW IS GOOD”. There is a clearance measurement, a leaderboard and even a cheeky message when you get too close.
It’s Flappy Bird… but with a plane… and a stadium.
The game was inspired by Saturday’s now-famous Airlink flypast ahead of the Springboks versus All Blacks clash. Two specially liveried Embraer jets flew in formation over DHL Stadium, creating an extraordinary visual that was broadcast live before rapidly spreading around the globe. And spread it did. The flyover has attracted plenty of controversy. Comment sections across social media and international news sites have been filled with opinions about whether the aeroplanes were too low, whether the manoeuvre was dangerous or whether it was an impressive display of flying skill.
Airlink has maintained that the flypast was carefully planned and rehearsed, with the airline saying the South African Civil Aviation Authority and Air Traffic Navigation Services provided guidance, approval and support. Each aircraft was crewed by three senior captains and Airlink said flight data confirmed that both flights remained within the approved and rehearsed altitude and speed limits.
But among all those debates have been hundreds of thousands of memes and brilliantly funny comments. It’s what South Africans do. Give us a massive talking point and we will debate it, dissect it and argue about it… but you can almost guarantee that somebody will find a way to make us laugh in the process.
And now, apparently, also create silly little funny games too.
You can access the game by clicking here. Watch out for the Hadedas.
