Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre’s donation will help the school’s KnitWits create scarves, blankets and other items for people in need.

Johannesburg, South Africa (01 September 2026) – There’s nothing quite like a delivery of wool to get a group of knitters excited and the KnitWits at Parktown High School for Girls now have plenty to keep their hands busy!

The school has received a generous donation of wool from Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre, following a Nelson Mandela Day collection organised by Lydia Khulu Zondo and her daughter, Amahle Zondo, the school’s 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day ambassador.

And this isn’t just a pile of wool sitting in a cupboard. It is about to become scarves, blankets and other handmade creations for people who need a little extra warmth.

The donation means more learners can get involved and more creations can make their way into the community.

The girls already use their knitting and crochet skills to create items for those in need, so having a fresh supply of wool means the work can keep growing.

Grade 11 learner Temitayo Oluwole says the donation is a reminder that the work they do is never a solo effort. It takes people willing to give their time, resources and skills to make a difference.

The school is now encouraging more girls to get involved, with plenty of wool waiting for willing hands. One stitch at a time, the KnitWits are helping spread a little more warmth around Johannesburg.
