Here’s a look at the key South African sporting events taking place across rugby, cricket and athletics.
Global (04 September 2026) – There’s plenty happening across the sporting world this weekend, with Formula 1 heading to Italy for the Italian Grand Prix, the US Open and Premier League football getting into full swing, and a number of Betway Premiership fixtures taking place across South Africa.
But if you’re looking for the big South African storylines, here are four teams and events worth keeping an eye on this weekend.
1. Springbok Women vs Black Ferns
The Springbok Women are getting another shot at the Black Ferns when the two sides meet at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on Saturday.
Babalwa Latsha will captain the Bok Women in what will be their first Test against New Zealand on home soil. South Africa will be looking to show how much they have developed since last year’s Rugby World Cup quarter-final, where the Black Ferns won 46-17.
Kick-off is at 13h30, with the match forming part of the Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry double-header.
2. Springboks vs All Blacks
Then it’s over to the Springboks, who will face New Zealand in the third Test of the Castle Lager Double Malt Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry at FNB Stadium on Saturday.
Rassie Erasmus has largely stuck with the team that featured in the first two Tests, making four changes and one positional switch. Ox Nche, Wilco Louw and Malcolm Marx return to the starting front row, while Cheslin Kolbe moves to fullback and Kurt-Lee Arendse comes into the starting XV.
It’s the Springboks’ final home match of the series, with the fourth and final Test set to take place in Baltimore later this month.
3. Proteas vs Namibia
The Proteas are also in action, with South Africa taking on Namibia in the T20I tri-series in Windhoek on Friday afternoon.
The series brings together South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe (all three co-hosts of next year’s ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup) in a useful early test ahead of the 2027 tournament.
South Africa head into Friday’s match with two wins from their first three games. They bounced back from an opening defeat to Namibia by beating Zimbabwe twice, most recently securing a 43-run victory on Tuesday. Lhuan-dre Pretorius was the star of that win, smashing 94, while Bjorn Fortuin and Duan Jansen impressed with the ball.
4. South Africa’s Athletics Stars at the Diamond League Final
And finally, eyes will be on Brussels, where some of South Africa’s top athletes will compete at the 2026 Wanda Diamond League Final.
Commonwealth Games 200m champion Sinesipho Dambile arrives in strong form after five podium finishes during the Diamond League season and a silver medal in Zurich. He currently sits at the top of the 200m standings and will be among the athletes chasing a Diamond Trophy.
So, plenty to look forward to this weekend, with the action stretching from the rugby field to the cricket pitch and the athletics track.
