South African radio stations are putting competition aside and joining forces to support country music legend and Bok Radio presenter Tommy Dell after a devastating car accident.
South Africa (10 September 2026) – Radio Stations may compete for listeners and their place on the dial but when one of their own needs help, those frequencies suddenly feel a whole lot closer together. And right now, South African radio stations are rallying around legendary country artist and Bok Radio presenter Tommy Dell.
The 85-year-old was returning from a charity concert he had performed at in Nelspruit on Saturday night, the 5th of September, when another driver reportedly crashed into the vehicle he was travelling in. Tragically, the two passengers travelling with Tommy died on impact, while Tommy survived and was rushed to Mediclinic Nelspruit, where he remains in hospital receiving treatment.
On Tuesday, Tommy’s son was informed that the available funds on his medical aid hospital plan had been depleted. Given his age and current condition, moving him before he has recovered sufficiently to be safely transferred would be incredibly difficult, so Bok Radio launched a crowdfunding campaign to help cover his medical costs and keep him at Mediclinic Nelspruit for as long as possible.
“Tommy Dell is such a positive, loving human being that will do anything for anybody and he has touched so many hearts with his music and positive attitude over the years that we believe we will be able to reach this target,” Louis van den Berg from Bok Radio explains.
Radio Laeveld, Pretoria FM, Smile FM and Lekker FM have all joined Bok Radio in supporting and promoting the campaign, with more stations potentially coming on board.
For us at Good Things Guy, this story is close to home. Many radio stations around the country use our articles to report on good news in South Africa but every weekday, without fail, during Heinrich’s show (from 2pm to 4pm), Bok Radio includes one Good Things Guy story in its news reports, deliberately adding a little good news to the day’s headlines. Today, we get to return the favour. There is immense sadness surrounding what happened on Saturday night, including the devastating loss of two lives, but there is also something incredibly moving happening around Tommy. A man who has spent decades entertaining South Africans now has radio stations, listeners, social media supporters and communities standing together when he needs them most.
Bok Radio is asking businesses and individuals who are able to help to support Tommy’s crowdfunding campaign, whether through a donation or by sharing his story.
For years, Tommy Dell has given South Africa his music and his voice, while Bok Radio has given our good news a place on its airwaves every afternoon. Today, it is our turn to turn up the volume for them.
