Some causes are worth walking for. For the first time ever, Tiny Owls Baby Home will host a 5km Community Walk to celebrate how far they have come over the past eight years, the 82 babies they have nursed and cared for and the amazing community that has walked this journey alongside them.
Durbanville, South Africa (29 September 2026) – In October 2018, Tiny Owls Baby Home opened its doors in Durbanville, Cape Town, with a simple purpose: to provide a safe, loving haven for abandoned and relinquished babies while they await family reunification or adoption.
Founders Kim and Wayne Allen converted part of their own home into a nursery, creating a warm environment that can care for six infants at a time. With their dedicated team of carers, they provide a secure, loving environment for babies in a beautiful purpose-built nursery.
Eight years later, 82 babies have come through those very doors.
Each little life arrived with their own story. Each in need of somewhere safe to be cared for, held and loved during an uncertain chapter at the very beginning of their life.
But behind every one of those babies has been something else that Tiny Owls could never have done without: the people who chose to show up. These are the volunteers who have given their time generously to help care for the babies, support the Baby Home and simply be there when another pair of hands was needed.
They have become part of the Tiny Owls story.
“So, when the team began thinking about how to celebrate its eighth birthday this October, they wanted to do something that brought those people together,” shares Juan Beukes of Tiny Owls Baby Home.
On 17 October 2026, Tiny Owls will host its first 5km Community Walk along the Sea Point Promenade. The walk will present the best opportunity to bring together the volunteers, carers, supporters, families, friends and businesses who have walked alongside Tiny Owls over the years, while inviting new people to become part of the community.
“It isn’t a race, and that is quite deliberate,” Juan says.
“It represents thousands of feeds, nappy changes, sleepless nights, cuddles and ordinary moments of care that happen quietly, every day. It represents carers who provide round-the-clock care and volunteers who continue to give something that cannot simply be bought: their time. And it represents 82 little lives that Tiny Owls has been privileged to be part of since 2018.”
The 5km walk has been kept relaxed and accessible. Families and friends are welcome, and participants can walk at their own pace while enjoying a morning together on the Promenade.
It is both a celebration and an invitation to the people who have supported Tiny Owls to come together and celebrate what they have helped make possible. It is also an invitation to those discovering Tiny Owls for the first time to come and meet the community behind the Baby Home.
“Because after eight years, one thing has become very clear to the Tiny Owls team: We could never have done this alone.”
