When the Coastal Horse Care Unit raised just R500 in a month toward critical horse vaccinations, Heartland KZN stepped in to amplify their appeal. What followed was an incredible rally of support that transformed their fate overnight.

KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (01 October 2026) – Every now and then, we all need a little helping hand, someone to spread the word and a boost when resources run low. The Coastal Horse Care Unit recently found itself in need of all three. The organisation had spent almost the entire month of September trying to raise more than R6,000 for African Horse Sickness vaccinations for horses in their care.

Despite the urgency of the appeal, by the end of September they had managed to raise only R500 in total. That was when TJ from Heartland KZN reached out to Tracy from Coastal Horse Care Unit to confirm whether the funding was still needed…it was.

Heartland KZN then stepped in and began sharing the appeal through its own community and social media network, encouraging people to support Coastal Horse Care Unit directly.

The response was nothing short of amazing! Within just 24 hours, the entire remaining balance had been raised, and the African Horse Sickness vaccination requirement was fully funded.

What had struggled to gain momentum for almost a month was completed in a single day once another welfare organisation chose to lend its platform, reach and community to the cause.

But this beautiful story is about far more than fundraising. It is about collaboration.

Animal welfare organisations across South Africa work under enormous pressure. There are always veterinary bills, feed costs, fuel costs, emergency cases and animals needing help.

In that environment, it would be easy for organisations to see one another as competitors for the same limited pool of donors. Heartland KZN believes the opposite.

“If one organisation has something another needs, whether that is a contact, a donor, an audience, a platform or simply a share, then helping one another strengthens animal welfare as a whole,” said TJ from Heartlands.

“The horses do not know which organisation purchased their vaccines. They do not know which Facebook page reached the donor. They simply benefit because people chose to work together.”

This is not the first time Heartland KZN has used its own reach to support the wider welfare community.

Good Things Guy has previously shared Heartland’s work around community collaboration, including the extraordinary response to its hay appeal and the 20 Ton Campaign, which brought organisations, donors and supporters together to help animals beyond Heartland’s own gates.

The Coastal Horse Care Unit vaccination appeal is another example of that same philosophy in action.

“There is something powerful about the ripple effect created when generosity does not stop with the organisation receiving it,” TJ shared.

One organisation had a need, another had a platform, the public had the ability to bridge the gap, and together, they did. And horses are safer because of it!
