With eight rounds of chemotherapy now behind her and hope guiding her forward, Karen is turning a hard-won milestone into a call for courage, early detection and self-advocacy.
Johannesburg, South Africa (02 October 2026) – Karen Pereira’s courageous journey through stage 3 triple-negative breast cancer continues, but the light at the end of the tunnel is shining a little brighter.
This week, the mother of one completed eight rounds of chemotherapy – a major milestone in a journey that has tested her health and resilience while placing her under financial strain.
Good Things Guy first shared Karen’s story at the beginning of the year, after her sister, Kirsten Pictor, revealed how a lump initially dismissed as a simple cyst was later diagnosed as a rare and aggressive cancer, turning both their lives upside down.
The journey has been long, and the treatment intensive, but Karen has kept going, driven by her determination to live fully and watch her daughter grow up.
Now, during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Karen is using her experience to encourage women to seek medical help as soon as they notice anything unusual in their bodies, because early detection can make all the difference.
“Please don’t automatically dismiss breast cysts. If something is persistent, painful, changing, or simply doesn’t look or feel right, please investigate it thoroughly. Biopsy when appropriate, and consider the full pathology picture,” Karen says.
“Trust your gut. Ask questions. Get a second opinion. Advocate for yourself.”
As she prepares for the next stage of treatment, including a mastectomy, radiation and continued immunotherapy, Karen remains hopeful that she will overcome this battle.
