The 17-year-old Junior Protea defended his African Laser Run title in Cape Town before taking two weeks off to focus on his examinations.

Cape Town, South Africa (07 October 2026) – Daniel Grove has had quite the week! First, a win: a continental title; collected another gold medal for the shelf; and then get back to studying.

The 17-year-old South African Junior Protea from the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley outside Hermanus successfully defended his African Continental Laser Run title in Cape Town on 3 October, making it back-to-back continental golds in the discipline.

Doing it on home soil made the victory even sweeter.

“Cape Town is my home. It is my backyard. To win here means everything,” Grove said.

It was not exactly a gentle day in the Mother City, either.

Strong winds made the shooting sections particularly tricky, with Grove admitting the conditions threw him off target. But where the shooting caused him some problems, his running helped him claw back the time.

“It was a tough race with strong competition,” he said. “The wind was very strong, especially with the shooting, it threw me off target. But I was able to recover with the running.”

That ability to adapt is something Grove gets plenty of practice with back home, where he trains on his family farm in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley.

He also had to race smart.

South African Dylan Kruger provided strong competition early on, with Grove deliberately staying close during the opening lap before making his move.

“I wanted to stick with Dylan for the first lap to get warmed up and get my focus right. And then I went for it with the shooting.”

The plan worked, and Grove eventually pulled away to claim the title.

The gold medal is the latest addition to an already impressive 2026 for the teenager, who also won silver at the U19 World Championships in Madrid in August and finished 19th overall at the UIPM World Cup in Budapest.

He is ranked fifth in the world at U19 level and has also competed against senior international athletes this season.

But for now, the running shoes and laser pistol are taking a short break. After a busy year of international competition, another continental title and plenty of time on the road, Grove’s next challenge is a little different.

No shooting range or even a podium. But focusing on his exams.
