A little act of kindness led the way home for a tin collector and his dog on a scorching road.
Albertinia, South Africa (12 October 2026) – Stopping is all it takes to make a change. Salome Bruyns, who runs animal welfare organisation Sentiara, was driving to Albertinia when she spotted a man walking along the road with his dog. They were in the middle of nowhere, and it was hot.

The first time she passed, her bakkie was full of her own dog. On the way back, it was empty, so she pulled over.
The man told her he collects empty tins to earn a little money. He had a big bag of them with him, with his dog in tow. Home was Kwanongaba, some 9 km away. Salome wasn’t about to let them walk that far in the heat, so she invited them into her bakkie, gave the dog food and water, gave the man something to eat and drove them home.
“I looked at the dog and couldn’t leave them to walk that distance in the heat back home. I loaded both of them into my bakkie, gave the dog water and food, and gave the man something to eat too. Then I took them home safely and gave extra food for the dog.” shares Salome.
Salome’s kindness did not end there either. From one animal lover to another, she took the opportunity to educate the man about something he may not have even realised.
“I explained that walking such a long distance with his dog in this heat is dangerous. The tar becomes incredibly hot and can burn a dog’s paw pads, and dogs can suffer heatstroke, which can be fatal.” says Salome. “I explained that even if he had water with him, walking 9 km in this heat is still not safe for his dog. This wasn’t about judging him. It was about education.”

She didn’t scold or judge him because the man clearly loves his dog enough to have him by his side while he works, and he simply didn’t know how risky the heat and tar can be.
As Salome says, not every situation is caused by cruelty. Sometimes people just haven’t been told. Now he knows, and his four-legged love is safer for it. What a difference an act of kindness can make!
