A most courageous act by junior lifeguard Nathan saved a woman drifting out to sea!
Cape Town, South Africa (13 October 2026) – Just four months after 14-year-old Nathan received his ‘official badge’ as a junior lifeguard, he has saved a life!
Nathan has been celebrated by Milnerton Surf Lifesaving Club on social media after his heroic act of bravery on Sunday, when he prevented a young woman from drowning in the surf.
“Nathan, 14 years old, qualified as junior lifeguard in June 2026 and has yet to do his first voluntary duty. Yet, when Nathan spotted a woman in distress in crashing waves about 75 m off – shore while out surfing at Milnerton Beach, he did not hesitate to rush to her assistance…” shared the club.
Paddling over to where she was struggling, Nathan managed to secure the young lady on his surfboard to keep her afloat, all while reassuring her that the lifeguards would be there soon.
A professional lifeguard on duty noticed the distressed lady drifting out to sea, paddled out on a board and took over from Nathan, returning her safely to shore.
“If it was not for Nathan’s quick, instinctive reaction, a sunny day out could have ended in tragedy for this young woman. We salute you for your quick action that saved a life.” the club shared.
It takes a huge amount of courage to dive into crashing waves, towards someone you don’t know, and Nathan did it without a flash of doubt. He kept her safe until the professionals arrived, and for that, he has our huge respect. Thank you, Nathan!
