When the Mabasa WILDTRUST team noticed that the garden at Mseleni Care and Compassion Ministries Children’s Home needed some sprucing up, they saw it as the perfect opportunity to grow fresh produce for the children who call the sanctuary home.

Mseleni, South Africa (14 October 2026) – At Mseleni Care and Compassion Ministries (MCCM) Children’s Home, a once-overlooked yard is becoming a place of nourishment, learning and hope.

When the WILDTRUST’s Mabasa team saw that the space needed some care not too long ago, it recognised an opportunity to grow fresh produce for the children who call the sanctuary home.

The team recently established a productive vegetable garden and continues to help maintain it. Beyond providing fresh vegetables, the garden encourages food production, environmental awareness and greater self-sustainability, helping the space flourish alongside the children it serves.

MCCM provides sanctuary, holistic care and Christian spiritual guidance to vulnerable children in the Mseleni community, including those who have been abused, neglected or orphaned.

To nurture both the garden and the home, WILDTRUST has placed two dedicated workers, Scelo Xulu and Azande Mabika, at MCCM. Their presence brings practical, daily support, from tending the vegetables to helping keep the surroundings clean, healthy and welcoming for the children.

Scelo and Azande prepare and maintain garden beds, plant and care for vegetables, water plants, remove weeds and help harvest crops when they are ready. They also support the garden’s continued development and assist with maintaining the wider space.

“Through the garden and the placement of these two workers, the Mabasa WILDTRUST team is contributing to improved food production, ongoing garden maintenance, additional support for the home’s general workers, and greater community participation,” Wildlands said.

The initiative also strengthens collaboration between WILDTRUST and the local community, showing how practical, hands-on support can create meaningful and lasting impact.

Grateful for the care and commitment shown by WILDTRUST, MCCM presented the organisation with a Certificate of Appreciation in recognition of the partnership.

Together, WILDTRUST and MCCM are growing far more than vegetables: they are nurturing teamwork, dignity, self-sustainability and hope for the future.
