The South African captain delivered when his team needed him most, helping the Proteas recover from a difficult start against Australia.
Gqeberha, South Africa (21 October 2026) – Temba Bavuma delivered one of the most important innings of his Test career, scoring 179 to put South Africa firmly in the driving seat against Australia in Gqeberha.
With Australia putting the hosts under pressure from the start, Bavuma stood firm and gradually turned the innings around.
Rather than allowing the early setbacks to derail the team, he built important partnerships with his teammates, including Simon Harmer and Marco Jansen. Together, they helped South Africa regain control and put Australia under pressure.
Bavuma’s innings was about more than just the runs he scored. It was a reminder of the value of staying calm when things are not going your way and finding a way to fight back when your team needs you.
The Proteas eventually declared their first innings at 425 for nine, giving themselves a strong platform from which to challenge the Australians.
There was also an encouraging moment for Kagiso Rabada, who returned from injury and quickly made an impact by dismissing Nic Maddinson for a duck. Australia were left on the back foot at the close of play, with one wicket down after a difficult start to their reply.
Seeing Bavuma leading from the front and the team showing resilience after an early wobble, the Proteas have reasons to feel encouraged as the Test continued.
