Camps Bay’s community has just pulled together to give Jestelene and Blacks a wedding day they won’t ever forget. It’s one of the SWEETEST things we’ve seen in a long while!

Cape Town, South Africa (21 October 2026) – We’re doing our best to hold back the tears over here, but we’re not sure how long we can keep it up!

The Camps Bay community has worked together to give two of its own their dream wedding. Jestelene Van Rooi and Mzwamadoda ‘Blacks’ Mpengezi tied the knot surrounded by people who believe in them and their future.

A short time ago, Jestelene and Blacks were living on the streets, doing their best just to get through one more day. Things look different now. The couple currently live in shelter accommodation and are taking part in a regenerative skills development programme run by Ignisive, built to help people step out of street life and into sustainable work.

Jestelene and Blacks are two of its community stewards. When they decided to tie the knot, their community understood their circumstances and surrounded them with love and support.

The Camps Bay City Improvement District, the South African Police Service, local security, businesses and community members all stepped in to add some magic to the day.

Fiona from Ignisve pulled the whole day together as wedding planner. Trish and Wayne from the local church hosted the ceremony and led the service. Warrant Officer Lakay had the honour of escorting the bride down the aisle.

Jestelene was spoiled, as a bride should be. Debbie from a local salon treated her to some bridal pampering, and Gavin and Rori Burnard from a neighbourhood restaurant did her make-up before feeding all the guests a celebratory lunch. Her dress and shoes were a gift from a generous member of a local church, and the wedding car and flowers were arranged by Muneeb, the manager of the Camps Bay CID.

Blacks also looked sharp in a suit and shoes arranged by Ignisive and Spencer, a CBCID chairperson. Sian Vessio of Step Brothers baked the wedding cake, and Tony Lottering wrote an original song just for the couple.

A dress, a suit, shoes, flowers, a cake, a lunch, a ceremony, a police escort down the aisle and a song written just for them. Isn’t that just so special!?

Seeing a community gather to celebrate and honour love in such a meaningful way is as heartwarming as it comes. Jestelene and Blacks may not have much in the way of physical possessions, but they are rich in the ways that truly count. They have each other, and the kindest souls in Camps Bay in their corner.

For one beautiful day, a group of people made a dream come true for a couple who deserve every bit of it. Jestelene and Blacks, congratulations! May your marriage be filled with tenderness, laughter, resilience and countless reasons to choose each other, every day.
