Whether you’re an experienced KnitWits or simply keen to join the fun, 67 Blankets is inviting Joburg seniors to a morning of knitting, crocheting, companionship and wildlife in celebration of Senior Citizens Month.

Johannesburg, South Africa (21 October 2026) – Senior citizens, knitting enthusiasts and the organisation’s much-loved KnitWits are invited to gather at the Johannesburg Zoo’s Bandstand precinct on Tuesday 27 October for a morning celebrating creativity, community and the contribution of older generations!

For 67 Blankets, which has brought thousands of people together through the simple act of knitting and crocheting blankets for those in need, the occasion is an opportunity to celebrate the skills, stories and generosity of senior citizens, many of whom have been at the heart of the movement.

“Some of our most extraordinary KnitWits are senior citizens who have given us their time, their skills and, most importantly, their hearts,” says Carolyn Steyn, founder of 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day.

“They remind us that there is no age limit to making a difference. Every handmade blanket represents hours of care and kindness, and this gathering is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the people who make that possible,” she says.

The morning, under the theme ‘A Day of Warmth, Wool & Wonder ‘, will feature communal knitting and crochet circles, music, picnics and opportunities to enjoy wildlife through assisted shuttle experiences designed to make the visit more accessible to older guests.

Thanduxolo Mendrew, Managing Director at Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo, says the Zoo is delighted to partner with 67 Blankets to celebrate the city’s senior citizens, while giving them a chance to reconnect, share their skills and enjoy one of Johannesburg’s most treasured public spaces.

Bring your wool, needles and friends

67 Blankets is encouraging participants to arrive ready to knit or crochet, whether they are experienced KnitWits or simply keen to join the fun.

Participants can bring their own wool or yarn, knitting needles or crochet hooks, or purchase wool at the event from The Factory Wool Shop, which will be on site.

Those who would prefer to donate a completed handmade (knitted or crocheted) blanket are equally welcome to do so.

“There is something rather special about sitting together, knitting, chatting and sharing stories,” says Annie Grealy, Chief Operating Officer of 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day.

“You arrive with your wool and needles and leave having made new friends, as well as something that will eventually keep somebody warm. We’re inviting our KnitWits, old friends and newcomers to join us at the Zoo. Bring your own wool, your knitting needles or crochet hooks, and come spend a lovely morning with us,” she says.

The event will also provide an opportunity for visitors to learn more about 67 Blankets and how they can become part of its growing community of volunteers.

Visitors are welcome to bring a picnic, picnic blanket or portable armchair and enjoy the morning at their own pace.

The collaboration brings together two organisations with a shared commitment to community participation, creating an occasion where older residents can reconnect, share their skills and enjoy one of Johannesburg’s best-loved public spaces.
