South Africa is brimming with gifted storytellers. Now, the Directors Guild of South Africa is taking down the barriers that stand between them and the decision-makers who can greenlight their dreams.
South Africa (21 October 2026) – Our country is bursting at the seams with talent. But talent alone has never built a film industry. South Africa’s screens are full of gifted storytellers, yet the doors between a good idea and a finished film stay shut for too many of them.
The Directors Guild of South Africa (DGSA) is setting out to change that.
The DGSA Directors Summit, a two-day director-led gathering, will take place in May 2027 and will put the executives who ‘greenlight projects’ face-to-face with the filmmakers who bring them to life.
“The creative flair is already here, but the route to commissioners, financiers and international buyers is still a maze for many filmmakers,” says Andile Sinqoto, Executive Director at DGSA.
“We want ideas to land in front of the people who can fund and champion them, and to give seasoned and first-time directors alike a genuine shot at bringing them to life.”
Aimed at turning contacts into commitments, the Summit will step away from the typical conference format to become a working platform. Shaped by practitioners who know what it takes to get a production off the ground, masterclasses, pitching sessions, first-look screenings and curated meetings will make up the two-day programme.
Sinqoto emphasises that the goal of the event is not to have people simply leave with a stack of business cards, but rather to have delegates walk out with relationships they can act on.
“Projects rarely fall apart because of a bad idea. They stall in the gaps between development, financing and distribution, so we are bringing every one of those players together under one roof.”
Four dedicated spaces put that into practice. Ideas get their moment on the Pitch Stage, funding conversations unfold in the Finance Room, the Distribution Room maps out routes to audiences, and the First Look Room gives selected filmmakers a showing in front of those who shape what gets commissioned.
Newcomers sit at the heart of the plan. Through the New Voices Programme, emerging directors will step into the spotlight with a showcase, mentorship and portfolio reviews that put their work in front of producers.
The Summit is also working towards bringing leading international filmmakers and experts to meet their counterparts at home and across the continent, with knowledge sharing, project discussions and co-production partnerships on the agenda.
“This is not a one-way street. Global audiences are hungry for fresh, authentic voices, and our international guests know it,” says Sinqoto.
“Sitting down with filmmakers from South Africa and across the continent, they will share market insight and find collaborators in return. Every one of those meetings brings us closer to a bigger goal, which is African stories travelling further and the sector realising more of its economic and cultural promise. For directors, that makes this a launchpad built with your future in mind. For partners and stakeholders, it is an invitation to back something that links imagination with opportunity.”
Keep an eye on DGSA’s official channels for further announcements around the event and ticket sales.
