First Steps

After facing serious health challenges, a little boy known as Liefie has reached a milestone that once seemed uncertain.

Somerset West, South Africa (25 October 2026) – The smallest steps mark the biggest victories.

When Liefie, whose name has been changed to protect his identity, arrived at Heartlands, he needed specialised care and ongoing medical support. Living with cystic fibrosis, cataracts and other health challenges, his journey was filled with treatments, hospital visits and difficult moments.

His health often fluctuated, with progress in one area sometimes followed by new complications. There were times when his condition became so serious that his future was uncertain.

With support from external healthcare practitioners, the Heartlands team continued working to find the right treatment and care for him. He received important medical interventions, including surgery to improve his eyesight.

Thanks to a generous sponsor, he also received his own little pair of glasses, helping him see the world more clearly. Then came a moment that brought enormous joy when Liefie took his first steps.

After spending so much of his early life navigating illness and physical challenges, learning to walk was far more than a developmental milestone. It was a moment of progress, determination and possibility.

And, as if the moment could not get any sweeter, he laughed as he did it.

That little laugh became a treasured memory for the Heartlands team, who had walked alongside him through difficult days and uncertain times. Seeing him stand on his own two feet was a reminder that progress can arrive in the smallest, most unexpected ways.

His journey shows that milestones do not always come in the form of grand achievements. Sometimes, they are found in a smile, a clearer view of the world or a few wobbly steps taken with courage. Today, Heartlands celebrates Liefie’s resilience and the progress he made during his time in its care.

The most meaningful part of his story is that he was eventually able to leave Heartlands and reunite with his grandmother, returning to the love and care of his family.

From uncertain beginnings to those joyful first steps, Liefie’s journey is a beautiful reminder to celebrate every little victory.
