What started as a simple appeal for educational toys and learning materials two months ago has turned into bright smiles, wide-eyed excitement, and new learning opportunities for the children of a preschool in Mamelodi!
Mamelodi, South Africa (23 October 2026) – For many children growing up in vulnerable communities, access to educational toys and stimulating learning materials can be hard to come by – even within early learning centres.
Wanting to help bridge this gap and give young minds the chance to thrive, the team at Pharos Community Centre set out on a special mission.
Back in August, Pharos put out a call for hands-on educational resources designed to spark creativity, confidence, and joy for the children at Bright Beginnings Daycare and Preschool in Mamelodi.
Just two months later, that plea reached the right hearts. Thanks to the overwhelming kindness of donors, those efforts turned into pure magic for 25 wonderful little souls.
On 19 October 2026, Pharos Community Centre visited the preschool as part of its CHICS outreach programme – and their hands were full! The day quickly transformed into a vibrant celebration of gifts, laughter, play, and discovery.
“What started as a simple appeal for educational toys and learning materials turned into a beautiful reminder of what can happen when a community comes together with open hearts,” shared Pharos Community Centre.
For the team, the visit went far beyond delivering supplies. It was about watching generosity turn into bright smiles, wide-eyed excitement, and meaningful opportunities for young children.
Each child received a warm blanket, colouring pictures, crayons and a packet of chips – simple gifts that brought comfort, creativity and a special treat to their day. But the excitement did not stop there. Thanks to the wonderful selection of educational toys donated by members of the community, the children had the opportunity to explore and learn through play.
From completing puzzles and sorting shapes to throwing and catching balls, the children eagerly participated in activities that encouraged creativity, problem-solving, coordination and social interaction. Their laughter, enthusiasm and curiosity just went to show that learning does not always happen behind a desk. Sometimes, it begins with a colourful puzzle, a ball or the excitement of discovering something new.

The toys will remain at Bright Beginnings, where they can continue to benefit the children long after the outreach day.
Through its involvement with the CHICS programme at Bright Beginnings, Pharos Community Centre hopes to contribute towards creating a nurturing and stimulating environment where children can learn, play and grow. What may seem like a small donation to one person can become an invaluable learning opportunity for a child.
A Heartfelt Thank You to Everyone Who Made It Possible
The real heroes of this story are the individuals and community members who opened their hearts and responded to Pharos Community Centre’s appeal.
“We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to every person who contributed towards this outreach. Seeing the excitement on the children’s faces and watching them enjoy the toys reminded us why community involvement is so important. None of this would have been possible without the generosity of those who supported us. You did not simply donate items – you helped create a day of happiness and opportunities for these children,” the Pharos team said.

Keeping the Kindness Going
While this particular outreach has come to a joyful conclusion, the work of Pharos Community Centre continues throughout the year.
Based in Garsfontein, Pretoria, Pharos supports vulnerable individuals and families through initiatives that include food assistance, clothing support, life skills development, educational projects and community outreach.
The organisation welcomes support from individuals, schools, churches and businesses who would like to make a difference. Donations of non-perishable food, good-quality second-hand clothing, stationery and fabric or sewing materials can help Pharos continue serving those in need and wonderfully contribute to the nationwide 1 Million Good Things Before Christmas challenge.
