The animal welfare organisation says it needs more individual donors and business partners to help sustain its essential services.

Johannesburg, South Africa (25 October 2026) – The Midrand SPCA is appealing to the public and business community for urgent financial assistance, warning that it is becoming increasingly difficult to cover the costs of its animal welfare services.

The organisation needs between R480,000 and R520,000 each month to keep operating, but currently faces a monthly funding shortfall of approximately R250,000.

Despite months of fundraising and continued support from generous donors, the SPCA says it needs to expand its funding base to ensure it can continue rescuing animals, investigating cruelty complaints and caring for animals in need.

For 37 years, the organisation has played an important role in the community, responding to emergencies, conducting inspections, investigating animal abuse and providing care for stray and vulnerable animals.

Its need for resources has grown alongside Midrand, where expanding residential developments, businesses and infrastructure have increased demand for animal welfare services.

Between April and September 2026, the SPCA reached more than 24,000 animals through its work. This included:

  • 14,607 animals monitored during routine inspections.
  • 153 cruelty investigations involving 3,207 animals.
  • 1,160 animals collected and rescued.
  • 130 after-hours calls attended to.
  • 3,631 animals admitted into its care.
  • 142 animals sterilised.
  • 1,266 animals provided with veterinary treatment and preventative care.

The organisation says these responsibilities continue regardless of the financial challenges it faces.

The organisation is seeking once-off donations, regular monthly contributions, substantial corporate funding commitments and introductions to potential major donors who could help secure its future.

While it is grateful for the support it already receives, the SPCA says the responsibility of keeping its services running cannot fall on a small group of donors alone.

Additional financial support will help the organisation cover its operating expenses, keep inspectors on the road and continue protecting animals across the community.

Members of the public and businesses who are able to contribute are encouraged to consider making a donation or becoming regular supporters.
