When a mother was told her son would likely leave the hospital with a disability, it was the nurses who surrounded her, encouraged her and went above and beyond for her little boy, who made a full recovery!

Gqeberha, South Africa (26 October 2026) – Public healthcare is something almost every South African has an opinion on. But every so often, we come across a story that does more than just shine a positive light. It restores faith in a system that, despite being overwhelmed by immense responsibility, still strives to leave patients better than it found them.

Kirsten Zelda Abrahams had this experience recently when her son spent nearly a month at Dora Nginza Hospital in Zwide, Gqeberha.

In a social media post, Kirsten opened up about how even though doctors didn’t have the most optimistic prognosis for her son’s recovery, it was nurses who encouraged her to keep the faith during one of the most difficult seasons of her life.

“The doctors had little hope and told me that my son would most likely leave the hospital with a disability. Those words were devastating, and as a mother, I struggled with the fear and uncertainty of what his future would look like,” Kirsten admits.

However, during one particular nursing shift, some nurses encouraged her to believe otherwise and not lose hope.

“Their words gave me strength when I needed it most. By the grace of God, my son left the hospital without a disability and has recovered well!”

The now-relieved and grateful mother added that, looking back, the difficult chapter reminded her of the power of prayer – not just her own but of the nurses who surrounded her too.

Kirsten dedicated the heartfelt post to the hospital’s Sister Clark, who she says went above and beyond for her little boy.

“Your kindness, dedication and the way you cared for him will never be forgotten. You made a difference in our lives, and I pray that God blesses you abundantly for the love and compassion you showed us.”

Kirsten also extended her gratitude to the other nurses, who cared for her son and supported her throughout this journey.

“You did more than care for a patient; you also showed compassion to a mother who was struggling emotionally.”

Kirsten acknowledged that while public hospitals face many challenges, and it was usually the negative stories that made headlines, it was just as important to highlight the good and give credit where credit is due.

“Today, I choose to celebrate the people at Dora Nginza Hospital who made a difference in our lives. Today, I choose gratitude. Sometimes, the good deserves to be heard just as loudly as the bad.”
