It was a night to remember for the Pirates, who turned up the goals at home to book their place in the CAF Champions League group stage.
Johannesburg, South Africa (26 October 2026) – If there was ever a reason for Orlando Pirates supporters to wear their black and white with extra pride, this weekend was it!
The Soweto giants put on a show at Orlando Amstel Arena, beating Namibia’s African Stars 4-0 to secure their place in the group stage of the CAF Champions League. After a narrow 1-0 win away from home in the first leg, Pirates returned to their home ground with work still to do, and they delivered.
The Buccaneers won 5-0 on aggregate, meaning they will be among the final 16 teams competing in Africa’s premier club football competition.
It all got started in the 16th minute when midfielder Thapelo Mokobodi found the back of the net, giving Pirates some breathing room and sending the home crowd into celebration mode.
But the Soweto side was not about to settle for the bare minimum. Evidence Makgopa, who had already helped out defensively early in the match, stepped up in attack and doubled the advantage just before half-time. He ran on to a pass from Simphiwe Masilela and calmly put the ball through the goalkeeper’s legs.
Substitute Mpho Padime made an immediate impact after coming on, scoring with his very first touch of the match just seconds into the second half. Not a bad way to introduce yourself!
Makgopa was not finished either. With just over 10 minutes remaining, the striker completed his brace after Deon Hotto made a promising run down the left before squaring the ball for him to finish.
By then, the Buccaneers had given their supporters more than enough reasons to celebrate. The victory was an important moment for the club.
They now advance as South Africa’s sole representatives in this season’s CAF Champions League group stage, giving local supporters another team to rally behind as the continental competition heats up.
For a club with such a passionate following, Friday night was about making a statement and reminding everyone that the Buccaneers are ready to take on Africa’s best.
