‘Because we love you.’ A new wheelchair, a clean room, a haircut, a first meal at Spur and those four special words left Oom Gerhard with all the happiness and hope. The video will make your day.

South Africa (26 October 2026) – Moeggesukkel is a local non-profit that goes from door to door, meeting South Africans who are often forgotten and finding out what would make their days easier.

Over the years, they’ve provided housing, food and opportunities to people in difficult circumstances. The organisation is carried by a community of amazing supporters. Together they make a huge difference.

Riaan, a key member of the non-profit, does many of these daily visits. Recently, one of them brought him to 73-year-old Oom Gerhard, who lives completely alone in a small, old room and struggles to walk.

Knowing Oom Gerhard has battled with his mobility, the first thing the team did was give him a wheelchair.

That alone changed how he could move through his day, but the kindness did not end there.

When the team visited the room he lives in, they decided the wheelchair wasn’t enough. They took the time to clean his space and give it a makeover. When Oom Gerhard saw what they had done, he was overwhelmed with gratitude and said he’d ‘sleep really well that night.’

That left the team beaming.

Then, they took him to a salon for a fresh haircut and to follow, a meal from Spur! It was the first time Oom Gerhard had ever set foot in Spur…

Not one item on that list is flashy. A wheelchair, a clean room, a haircut and a meal out are things often taken for granted. But when you live alone and have nothing, those little things can feel permanently out of reach. Having them given to you carries a message that you are not forgotten and that you are deserving of those things.

A haircut can make a person stand a little taller, and a tidy room can make a small room feel like a home. A first-ever steak meal sparks joy and becomes a cherished memory to hold on to.

One very special moment from the day was caught on video, where Riaan tells Oom Gerhard that the team will keep looking out for him, because they love him. Those four words brought us to tears. Love is the most powerful thing there is, and it’s something almost anyone can offer.

If this story sounds familiar, you might be thinking of Oom Shorty. Moeggesukkel has walked alongside him and his wife since 2023, and over the years they’ve helped him with a trailer for his recycling work, a new cellphone, a wooden home and his first-ever pair of prescription glasses. Not long after, he too had his first Spur meal, at 62.

This is the incredible compassion that Moeggesukkel practices on the daily. The group focuses on restoring hope and dignity, not only meeting basic needs, so the people they help can enjoy life and not just get through it.

This wholesome video of Oom Gerhard’s special day with Moeggesukkel says everything about what love can do, in the most special way.
