Finishing strong is worth celebrating, but doing it with the support of an entire community makes it unforgettable! Zimkitha Vokozela experienced this firsthand over the weekend when she pushed through pain and fatigue to complete the #Melkbos15 as the last runner.
Cape Town, South Africa (26 October 2026) – Everyone deserves to be celebrated for completing something hard, extraordinary, or wonderfully amazing.
Zimkitha Bulelwa Vokozela ‘did a thing’ over the weekend that encompassed all three when she finished the #Melkbos15. She crossed the finish line as the last runner, and the most touching part? She was welcomed like a hero!
A member of the West Coast Athletic Club, Zimkitha participated in the Melkbos 15km Road Run & 5km Beach Walk – an annual running and walking event hosted by the Melkbos Athletic Club in Melkbosstrand, Cape Town. She had one key goal in mind: to see it through to the very end, despite the difficulties she faced along the way.
A video captured the special moment when she was met with happy cheers and applause by the Melkbos club and fellow runners, who were so proud of her determination and grit.
Zimkitha’s home running club also extended its heartfelt appreciation to the Melkbos Athletic Club for making her feel like the absolute superstar she is.
“Our runner, Zimkitha Bulelwa Vokozela, finished the #Melkbos15 in 3:20:04 . She came home as the last runner and was welcomed like a hero. To Zim, we’re incredibly proud of you for showing so much grit and determination to finish this race. You are an inspiration to many runners,” the West Coast Athletic Club shared.
Admiring the beautiful moment and spirit of a supportive running community, social media users left lovely messages in the comments section:
Kobus van Staden wrote:
“That is why I love my running family, especially the ones in my category. Along the way, during the race and even after, they encourage, they will make you feel you belong and they treat you as a human being. Running Rocks. Proud slow runner!”
Henricus Cook commended Zimkitha for sticking it out for as long as she did on the road, saying:
“3:20 hours on the road is no joke, no matter the pace.”
John Mabena also shared:
“Any runner who starts a race and finishes it, irrespective of the time, to me, that’s a top runner.”
And we couldn’t agree more. A huge well done to you, Zimkitha, and to the incredible cheerleaders who were present to give you your flowers!
