When a fire destroyed 500 homes without a moment’s notice, the Kempton Park SPCA Inspectorate team rushed to offer support to families and animals who lost everything.
Kempton Park, South Africa (27 October 2026) – In the early hours of Monday morning, a devastating fire broke out in an informal settlement in Pomona, Kempton Park, reportedly destroying approximately 500 homes and leaving many families with nothing.
With hearts heavy for the affected community, the Kempton Park SPCA Inspectorate team rushed to the area to offer support and check whether any animals had been caught in the blaze.

Residents shared that while only a few households kept dogs, several had cats as companions. Tragically, as inspectors carefully searched through the remains of the burnt structures, they discovered the remains of cats that had been unable to escape the flames.
“We also rescued cats found beneath the rubble. These animals have been taken to a veterinarian for examination for possible smoke inhalation, burns and other injuries, and treatment where necessary,” the Kempton Park SPCA team shared.
“There are also unconfirmed reports that some families may have lost loved ones in this tragedy. Our hearts go out to every person affected.”

Another team will return to continue searching between the burnt homes, beneath collapsed structures and amongst the rubble for injured, trapped or frightened cats. Frightened and injured cats may hide in the smallest spaces, and we want to give every surviving animal the best possible chance of being found.
It is hard to imagine what it must feel like to lose everything you own in the blink of an eye. Your home, belongings, memories, and, for some, even the people and animals you love. The Kempton Park SPCA is now turning to the public for help to change lives in the blink of an eye.
“We urgently need your help with donations towards veterinary examinations, treatment and care for the cats rescued from this devastating fire. Our rescue efforts are continuing, and the cats we have found are already receiving veterinary attention. Your donations will help us cover the costs of their care.”

Behind every burnt home is a family whose life has been turned upside down. Behind every animal lost is a life that mattered. Every contribution, no matter how small, helps cover the costs of essential care and relief and is deeply appreciated.
