After years in the care of Paws R Us, six-year-old Leroy stepped up to save another dog’s life this week. Our hope is that his bravery will finally win him a family!
Johannesburg, South Africa (03 November 2026) – A pooch who has been in Paws R Us’ care for years became a hero on Monday.
Leroy is six years old. He and his mommy-dog, Lucy, have been in the loving care of Paws R Us for years now. They have both waited patiently to find their forever homes.
Recently, the local animal welfare organisation moved from its previous location in Riverview to a new property in Midrand, shared with the Society for Animals in Distress (SAID).
The team says it couldn’t be happier with the change. The infrastructure is better, there are new kennel blocks, and they have direct access to the veterinary hospital on the property.
Lucy and Leroy, along with a squadron of shelter dogs, are now finding their paws again in their new kennels, alongside their new neighbours.
This week, the vet hospital’s manager, Angela, made an urgent call to Paws R Us. A doggie was in trouble and needed a hero.
“Given our new location at the The Society for Animals in Distress, their vet hospital is situated close to our kennel rows. Today we received a call from Angela, the hospital manager, to ask if we had a dog of suitable size who could donate blood to save another dog who was in trouble.” writes the organisation.
Leroy became that brave hero!

“Our LEROY was an absolute LEGEND,” the team wrote. “Our Carer, Thando, stayed with him the whole time while the SAID team worked with Leroy to get the blood donation sorted.”
The organisation shared its relief that the other dog now has his best chance of pulling through, thanks to Leroy.
“Thank you SAID team! Thank you, Thando. And of course, a BIIIG THANK YOU to the hero of the story, our LEROY!”
We think the ultimate gift for Leroy’s bravery would be a home. A family with endless love to give, and perhaps even room for one more, his mom, Lucy. We’ve seen what hope can do, and we have the highest hopes for Leroy!
Thank you for being a hero, boy.
