Jamandi and Machiel Bekker, winners of My Kitchen Rules South Africa have kept their promise and given runners-up a cheque from the winnings.
The winners of the first season of My Kitchen Rules South Africa, avidly known as the LekkerBekkers, handed the cheques of R10 000 each to the runners-up over the festive period.
“We made a promise to each other that if we won, we would give the other team R20 000 to share. It’s just a small gesture of kindness for making it so far together.”
The LekkerBekkers took the title of South Africa’s best home cooks and won a whopping R1 Million cash prize after beating Charnell and Kerry from Johannesburg’s Weltevreden Park in the spectacular season finale, in which both teams were tasked to create a gourmet five course meal.
“This whole show has changed our lives,” an emotional Machiel revealed.
The series finale also happened to fall on the couple’s tenth wedding anniversary, making the victory even sweeter.
“I never knew how much Machiel actually loved me until our My Kitchen Rules journey,” Jamandi admitted. “I’m so excited to win My Kitchen Rules, but the thing that excites me even more is our marriage.”
Responding to questions about how the money will be spent, Jamandi and Machiel said they never anticipated the prize to come their way, thus, they have no idea what they are going to do with it.
“I was taught that you first earn something and then you dream about it.”
Jamandi coudn’t get over the excitement, saying she’s still overwhelmed and cannot believe they won the prize. “We never thought in a million years that we could win. This entire journey has been an amazing experience and learning from David and J’Something was one of the highlights.”
