South African volunteers assist with getting water to drought-stricken Limpopo.
For some in the Waterberg District, sadly, day zero has already arrived.
The Waterberg District of Limpopo is on the brink of also reaching Day Zero. For the last month, water levels at Donkerpoort Dam and Frikkie Geyser Dam have dropped to 14% and 12%, leaving the area with approximately 49 days of drinking water.
Consequently, the municipality has taken stringent measures towards the reduction of the use of water from 125 litres to 97 litres per person per day.
Operation SA and Laudium Disaster Management volunteers took the task head on to distribute 50 000 litres of drinking water to the Jasper informal settlement, Ext 6 Phagameng and Ext 10 and 12. Water was also given in the Town Centre.
A hostel in As Salaam also got two pellets filled with bottled water.
#SaveWater Ambassador and Operation SA’s Yusuf Abramjee said: “The situation in parts of Modimolle is dire. Many residents don’t have water and the taps are dry. Others have to walk kilometers only to get dirty water.
“People queued as the trucks arrived. There were scenes of joy. Many begged us to return with more water,” said Abramjee.
He said residents complained they were being deprived of a basic human right.
“It’s sad to see how people are struggling for water. It’s heartbreaking. The levels of two dams in the area are low and the infrastructure is poor,” added Abramjee.
