Black Panther

Joburg Ballet has a powerful ‘bite-size’ interpretation of the big news today. This time they have focused on ‘Black Panther’ and the empowering movement behind the movie.

Black Panther has made history as the highest grossing superhero movie of all time. In South Africa, it has made history as the first movie to ever, grossing R100 million since its release.

The movie was released on the 16th of February and has broken multiple records, inspired new fashion on runways and red carpets, and catapulted African culture onto the global market.

Black Panther crossed the R100 million mark for local box office in its 9th week on screens. It took R101.2 million to date, becoming the first film to achieve this record in South Africa.

The movie also inspired 94.7 to help get thousands of underprivileged children to see the movie, they raised R1-million to go towards tickets, transport and snacks.

If you are a frequent reader of Good Things Guy, you will know that we LOVE the ‘bite-sized’ ballet performances given by Joburg Ballet. The last one we discussed the Gun Control performance. Of all the performances we have shared, the Black Panther one is the best yet!

We jumped at the opportunity to incorporate a Wakanda-inspired episode into our #BreakingBallet series. It features the indomitable Monika Cristina, Kitty Phetla and Claudia Monja as Dora Milaje warriors, laying down a challenge to any would-be adversaries of African culture.
