South Africans are being encouraged to ‘be the legacy’ of Mandela by taking part in a new initiative that will see the last Friday of every month becoming ‘Mandela Friday’
“Mandela Fridays” are being implemented to encourage South Africans to get involved on a monthly basis, in acts of service and social activism in honour of the late Nelson Mandela. This is being implemented by the government as part of the celebration for his Centenary.
“The centenary celebration aims to promote Madiba’s ethos of Ubuntu by advancing our collective unity irrespective of race, creed or orientation. The Intention of the theme is to foreground characteristics and values for which former president Mandela was renowned across the world.” – Minister Jeff Radebe
This year, many incredible things will be taking place in honour of the first democratic president and struggle icon. The Comrades Marathon will be dedicating to Tata Madiba and the final antenna of the Meerkat radio telescope will be dedicated to him. The telescope is located in the Northern Cape. Later this year the Vanderkloof Dam will be renamed to honour Madiba.
Mandela Day this year will be a national celebration to celebrate the Centenary.
This is all great news considering that Nelson Mandela became the first democratic president of South Africa on this very day (9th of May) 24 years ago! May 9, 1994, Madiba was unanimously elected president by the National Assembly.
We miss you every day Tata Madiba!
