The Red Cross Children’s Hospital has a YouTube channel filled with inspiring videos of the children fighting to live, doctors sharing their hopes and thankful parents taking their babies home.
We were totally surprised by the Red Cross Children’s Hospital YouTube channel. A reader sent us an inspiring video about a 7-year-old boy from Mitchells Plain who is currently fighting cancer at the hospital. The video was moving and featured his mother, telling the story of how the hospital had helped her cope with her son’s diagnosis.
We went to see what else the hospital had uploaded and were blown away by the amount of content on the channel. There are videos about kids fighting cancer, recovering from burns and the amazing stories of when they finally get to go home.
The hospital focuses on children predominantly from impoverished communities throughout South Africa and Africa. It is the top children’s hospital on the African continent. This is thanks to the trust, which raises funds to continuously improve the hospital, its state of the art equipment and staff training.
‘The Trust is an independent nonprofit organization established in 1994 to raise funds to support specific projects and programmes to help advance child healthcare through the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital – the first stand-alone tertiary hospital, exclusively for children, in sub-Saharan Africa’
The operational costs of the Trust are funded by an endowment, so the donations received are never used to cover administration costs.
Over 250,000 children are treated each year and a third of them are under the age of 1-year-old. Children from all across South Africa and even from other African countries are treated here. The hospital specially caters to the impoverished marginalised communities.
Another one of the great things the hospital does, it offers the opportunity to donate freshly expressed breast milk to the prem babies that are unable to have their own mother’s milk. These donations literally save the lives of babies. You can find out more about it here.
