An Eastern Cape Police unit used their own initiative, money and time, and spent Christmas Day handing out lunch and presents to those less fortunate.
An Eastern Cape Police unit put together a project that fed more than 200 kids in streets of Kwanobuhle. It was something they decided to do as a Christmas Lunch for the kids who would not receive anything on a day that should be celebrated by everyone.
“Working in this community where we always have to serve them with dignity and pride is not always an easy task.”
KwaNobuhle is a large township on the outskirts of Uitenhage in the Eastern Cape province in South Africa. Township communities are faced with several poverty, lack of services and social problems. Most often, the residents of townships do not own the land on which their houses are built. In effect, these houses are built illegally. Construction is informal and unregulated by the government. This results in a lack of access to basic services such as sewerage, electricity, roads and clean water, which adversely affects residents’ quality of life.
A few days before Christmas, the Crime Prevention Unit (CPU) from Kwanobuhle came up with an idea to serve the children with a plate of food and party pack on Christmas, as most of them are less fortunate.
“We made this a reality with us as officers contributing few rand out of our pockets and get a few sponsorships from most of the local foreign shops around the kwanobuhle area. We approached our Biggest Supermarket in the Area for a sponsor and they didn’t hesitate to assist us.”
The CPU spent the entire morning cooking and packing gifts and then took to the streets to share the Christmas joy! The day was filled with kindness and happiness, and all the residents had an amazing time.
“We would like to thank our Station Commander Lt Col. Goeda for granting us the permission to do good for our community on this memorable day. We gratefully and with a warm heart would like thank all the Foreign Shops for their contributions, all the members of CPU of Kwanobuhle for taking the initiative to come up with this project, our local Shoprite store and manager for opening her office door to listen and give without hesitation and members of Kwanobuhle Station for their assistance and contributions.
We all winessed how kids smiled, enjoyed the food and walked away with a gift. What a warm hearted feeling we could bring to the streets today. It made us Happy knowing we could do little for our community.”
