Update: Finding home for pups, after owner's heartbreaking diagnosis

Vukile had to give his dog and her puppies away so he could go home to die after receiving his final diagnosis… now Lizzy needs help finding a home.

Overberg, Western Cape – We know you have all been waiting for an update about Vukile*, Lizzy and her pups since January. This is an update about Lizzy and her puppies, sadly Vukile has not yet been tracked down so we still have no idea how he is doing. If you are not sure what we are talking about, here is the backstory.

Vukile was diagnosed with diabetes and was told by his doctors that due to his complications, there was nothing more that they could do for him. He accepted that he would die and started to sort out the loose ends in his life before going home to the Eastern Cape to live with his parents.

One of the things that had been weighing heavily on his heart, was giving up his loyal dog, Puppy (now Lizzy). He wanted to be sure that she went to a good home. He called R.A.D (Rescued Animal Drive) and asked them to come to pick her up and take her two 5-day old puppies as well.

R.A.D went to collect the dogs thinking it was yet another irresponsible owner shoving off the responsibility of owning a pet. They were shocked to hear Vukile’s story when they arrived.

“He shed a few tears when we loaded Puppy and her pups and thanked us for taking her to a safe place.

We could not help feeling extremely sad, being reminded of what we have and those who still have good hearts despite being dealt such a bad hand.

Puppy’s loyalty was heartwarming and we had to take her away from the only home she has ever known.”

Since the puppies have become old enough, they both found loving new homes through the organisation. Sadly, Lizzy has had a few health problems and needs to have expensive surgery. Once the surgery is done, she will need a loving foster family (or even better, a forever home) to recover.

The organisation is working to raise funds for Lizzy and hopefully find a retirement home for her to spend the rest of her days.

“She has been in a fabulous foster home and the puppies have grown into strong healthy little tykes and already have home checks pending. We took the little family for a checkup today and whilst we knew Lizzy’s hips were not great we did not expect to hear that she needs a cruciate ligament operation.”

“This means an R4000 operation, a calm foster home where she can recover for a month but most importantly a forever home.

“She is an old dog who has led a very tough life in the township and probably borne half a dozen puppies. She really does look tired and defeated but our hearts still want to give her a chance of the good life now that she has weaned her last demanding puppy forever!”

Within 12-hours of their plea for assistance, they received R2250.00 worth of donations. They went ahead with the surgery so Lizzy could have a fighting chance at being adopted.
