Wayde van Niekerk injured his knee late in 2017 and took off some much-needed time to rehabilitate it but he has now released a statement to say he is on his way back.
South Africa – Wayde van Niekerk has taken a well-deserved and much-needed break to focus on repairing his body. After injuring his knee in 2017, he underwent surgery and then got back to the track. Earlier this year he had a minor injury once again and had to take time off to recover.
Wayde travelled to Doha to the Aspecter Sports Medicine Hospital for additional treatment. Now back in Gemona, Italy Wayde has been given the go-ahead by coach Ans Botha to resume training.
This is excellent news for fans as he can now start working towards getting back on the track. He took to Twitter to share the good news about his comeback, saying,
“I’m so positive and just taking things day by day, respecting my body and when the opportunity comes, I’ll take it! No rush. Thanks so much for all your support!” – Wayde van Niekerk
Sadly his rehabilitation took a little longer than initially expected so Wayde will not be defending 400m title at the upcoming IAAF World Championships in Doha.
His doctor, Louis Holtzhausen, feels confident that Wayde will be back shortly. Dr Louis confirmed they were using all the latest rehabilitation methods and have had great results.
“The medical teams, both in Bloemfontein and Aspecter, did all we could to have him ready for the IAAF World Championships, but it was just not possible.”
“However, he has successfully returned to track training and all indications are that he will recover more rapidly from now on” – Dr Louis Holtzhausen
Wayde, we wish you the best for your final recovery, introduction back to track training and everything that follows. We cannot wait to see you back on the track.
Hey Guys. Here is an update on my come back. I’m so positive and just taking things day by day, respecting my body and when the opportunity comes, I’ll take it! No rush. Thanks so much for all your support! 💜 pic.twitter.com/gCmb0VpPcH
