Penguin chicks are being orphaned for all kinds of reasons, and SANCCOB needs help caring for them, so they are allowing the public to adopt them.
Cape Town, South Africa – The Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) is a leading marine-orientated non-profit organisation in South Africa, experts and internationally recognised leaders in oiled wildlife response, rehabilitation and chick-rearing.
They have treated more than 90 000 oiled, ill, injured or abandoned endangered African penguins and other threatened seabirds since being established in 1968.
Their premises in Table View, located right on the Flamingo Vlei is home to hundreds of seabirds who are in the process of being rehabilitated back into the wild.
They are in the swing of their chick season. The organisation has been rescuing abandoned chicks and eggs from abandoned nests.
“With 35 African penguin chicks in our chick-rearing unit, it’s officially chick season at SANCCOB! Seven were incubated and hatched in our care and 28 were rescued from abandoned nests in the colonies due to moulting parent birds.
They are hungry chicks and will consume increased portions of sardine feeds over the next 3 months. In a few days, you’ll be able to adopt and name them – as a special gift or for yourself just because you care”
