A Christmas market that gives back to charity is precisely what we need leading into December; Nicarela raises funds for people in need.
Johannesburg, South Africa – Nicarela Charity is a non-governmental organisation whose purpose is to raise funds to support several outreach projects. A boy needs an operation, two girls can’t afford to school, a nursery school needs a classroom, an abused woman needs shelter? Nicarela organises events and markets with volunteers where proceeds from these events are given to various charities that are well active in the community helping those that need to get through a crisis.
Over the last 11 years, the funds raised by Nicarela fundraising activities have generated over R6,2 million and donated to over 50 organisations! Without the help of the community gathering, and supporting the events none of this would be possible
Last year’s Parkview Charity Christmas Market, one of the events organised by Nicarela, raised R1.2 Million for the beneficiaries of Nicarela Charity and this year we hope that the target of R1.5m will be achieved. Taking place at George Hay Park the Parkview Christmas Market two-day experience that hosts 10 000 people who come out to shop for gifts, fill their Christmas stockings, revel in the food and drink offerings to the background tunes of local music talent all in the name of goodwill. The event promises fun and entertainment suitable for the whole family.
“Bursaries for those in the community is one element of the giving, along with the support to more than 20 different beneficiaries with different causes that all benefit from the proceeds of the Parkview Charity Christmas Market. These bursaries are awarded to children living in the community that aren’t fortunate enough to afford to pay fees. Supporting the young minds in our community for them to be able to get an education is undoubtedly an important philosophy that is core to who we truly are. To be a part of someone’s journey in pursuing their dreams is a value that can not only be seen but felt too”, says Graham Hamilton, Nicarela Chairman.
Organisations such as The Frida Hartley Shelter, at their fullest capacity, per month can accommodate 40 women and children. It costs them around R49.32 per person, per day to shelter the individuals. Many women who first come to the shelter have very few possessions or resources. Adult and children’s clothes, blankets, nappies, toiletries, sanitary products and cleaning agents are some of the donated products that the shelter requires on a monthly basis.
Considering aspects such as the shocking statistics of gender-based violence and child abuse in South Africa, more women and kids would need more support from a shelter like Frida Hartley to support and build the lives and self-esteem of destitute and abused women and children.
“You coming to the market is you helping another woman or child get all the help they need to get them back on their feet. it surely is difficult sometimes to donate to charities the Parkview Charity Christmas market is just the perfect way to for you to have a good time while at the same time being part of something larger than yourself” – Cheryl Hlabane, operations manager at Frida Hartley Shelter.
